The Power of Description
“Anything that is human is mentionable, and anything that is mentionable can be more manageable.”
Mister Rogers, the beloved Children’s television personality, was a great man and a powerful healer. I dare suggest that he was, in a sense, a shaman because he committed his life to providing simple and easy to follow help to precious souls as they grappled with complicated internal and external realities.
My favorite of his sharings is that what is mentionable is manageable. This is one of the ways Ayahuasca contributes to our healing—by helping aspects of our life’s experience to become mentionable and therefore instantly more manageable. Ayahuasca helps us to discover more about known and unknown things we are experiencing. In this way, the medicine of Ayahuasca enables us to be able to converse about it in accurate detail with ourselves and potentially someone else we trust.
When we are able to give better words to what is affecting us, to give it a name that accurately describes its essence, we are well on our way to changing/healing it. It’s power over us begins to diminish simply because it is no longer in the shadows but now in the loving light of our awareness. The light cleanses and purifies, leaving all that it touches better.
Better = more manageable.
